About Me

The aim for this project is for my group and I to create a music video that follows the codes and conventions of others with a similar target audience in the current market and use techniques to make the audience relate to it. We hope if the target audience were to see our video, a sense of verisimilitude would be created as our video would use similar features and conventions to others in the market.

Development: Filming

This was our first location. Our story line is centered around our artist sending a letter to her lover, at the first shot is of her sending the letter, the rest of the video is what happened before she sent it.

The red post box is iconography of London, letting the audience know straight away (as this is the first shot) of where the video is set.

We used the tripod to make sure all our filming was steady, so it looked professional. If we were not use the tripod and instead have a hand held shot, the footage may have come out blurry and not steady.

As this was the first shot of the music video, this shot was used as an establishing shot to make sure the audience are clear of the location. Red post boxes are iconography of London and this tells the audience straight away that this is where the video is set.

A long shot was used so the audience can see the artist's whole body and also whats in the background, allowing them to see that the artist is posting a letter. By being able to see what the artist is wearing also allows them to see her personality. The artist is wearing cream which suggest softness and delicacy, something that our target audience wanted.

We starting off with an establishing shot, but moved closer so it is clear she has posted the letter and so her face could be seen as she starts singing.

We thought using a blank wall would be useful to get some singing shots so the audience can just focus on the artists emotions on her face. If there was lots happening in the background the audience would be distracted from these emotions and therefore the effect of sadness and loneliness would not come across to the audience.

We used the tripod to make sure the camera was steady for if the camera was handheld it would have a completely different effect. The dolly and the track creates a smooth effect whereas a handheld camera would create a documentary/home video effect.

We are retaking these 'cafe' shots in a new location. When watching these particular clips back, we did not feel they matched the codes and conventions of a music video and did not look effective. We plan to get our artist writing the letter on her bed, which we think would go well with the other elements of the video.

We had a very productive filming session on Friday and have started editing this footage. We are bearing in mind all the codes and conventions of music videos when editing, as we did when filming. Using this equipment was new to all of us and we have been interested in learning the different types of shots we can use with the equipment and the different effect they have on the audience.
